PRESTIGE LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS
Galician coast (E), 2002
In 2002, the oil tanker Prestige broke up during a storm off the coast of Galicia in Spain, releasing 64,000 tonnes of gasoline. Robert Gschwantner traveled to different spill-sites and collected oil sludge and saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean.
Collages made from tourist guides and brochures from Gallicia were arranged into landscapes and then covered with hundreds of meters of woven PVC tubing containing oil sludge and seawater.
